In a profession long held by people who bullied and intimidated the musicians in front of them, I believe that the time of the tyrants in classical music is over.

Some of the old scare-tactics still linger in my profession, both in the attitude of some conductors and in the expectations that the singers and players might have. But I believe that affirming soft power and sensitivity is a strength for a leader. And in my opinion, it’s where we are headed in future leadership in my field.

For the past 13 years, I have served as Executive Director of the Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST), stewarding an organization with a 50-year legacy of environmental impact and community service. Leading CREST has meant navigating political dynamics, transitions, climate challenges, and complex stakeholders, and doing so with resilience, impact, and mission at the core.
Some of the milestones we are celebrating in our 50th year:
– Restoring habitat for 13 threatened and endangered salmon species
– Expanding our geographic reach and regional influence
– Building a small but exceptional team bringing innovation and care
– Leading regional collaboration and stakeholder facilitation
– Earning trust as a leader in science-based restoration and emerging technologies
– Our scope is growing, partnerships deepening, and our reputation remains strong
– Just as important, we are integrating the internal work of presence into our culture, because how we show up with one another shapes everything else

And on my spiritual journey, I am drawn to pursue Buddhist Chaplaincy, continuing to bring compassion, wisdom, and service into every part of life.

The future? I’ll continue to build, mobilize teams, create spaces where people thrive, and model that success is possible without sacrificing self. It’s not just checking boxes, it’s leveling up. Because true leadership is not about doing it all, it’s about doing it differently.

From Perfectionism to Purpose: Building a Legacy in Cancer Research
When I joined Rewired, I was an early-career lead scientist in biotech. Ambitious and determined, yet still defining what leadership meant to me. With Fernanda’s guidance, I grew into senior leadership roles and, ultimately, into the leader I am today.
Through Rewired, I discovered something different, that true leadership is not about doing, but about being.
Being authentic.
Being courageous.
Being present.
I learned to lead with audacity, unafraid to step into the unknown, trusting my ability to find a way forward. I learned to lead by example, with heart and soul, with humbleness and purpose.
The legacy I want to leave is clear: to serve. To make a difference in patients’ lives through science, to contribute to cancer and rare disease research, to mentor and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, and to show what is possible for women, especially Latina women, in STEM.
Today, I am grateful to be co-creating and growing Spectrus with my amazing husband, advancing innovation that supports patients and connects the biotech ecosystem. And I am equally proud of my legacy at home, as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, because true leadership starts with family.
